Words you’ll see in Jean
- Explainer
- About 3 minutes
- Every browser
Jean uses a few words of its own. The one to know first is brain: the AI that writes the answers. The others come as you go, each when Jean first shows what it names.
The words, in the order you meet them
- Brain
- The AI that writes the answers: a service in the cloud, a plan you already pay for, or a brain on this device. Jean itself writes nothing. You choose yours in Settings › Brains: see Choose the AI that answers.
- Auto
- Which brain each request gets, chosen for you: a quick one for a quick question, a stronger one for a demanding task, and the one on this device for anything personal, when you have one.
- Task
- One request and all that follows from it: the answers, the steps Jean took, the files. Each task is in the task list; New task starts another.
- Approvals
- What Jean does by itself, asks you first, or never does, for each kind of action: Do it, Ask me first or Never, in Settings › Approvals. See When Jean asks first.
- Capability
- Something Jean can do, such as reading your files or working out exact figures. Each shows up when a moment calls for it; Settings › Capabilities lists them all. See How Jean shows what it can do.
- Project
- Anything you keep coming back to, kept apart from the rest: its own tasks, files, notes and instructions. Its name is at the top of the window.
- Creation
- Something Jean made that stays in the project, to open and change again: a document, a collection, slides, a design, a picture, a score or an app. Once there is one, they are all under Creations.
- Collection
- A list Jean keeps for you in rows and columns, shown as a table or a board: job applications, expenses, books to read.
- Design
- Something Jean lays out to print, post or send: an invitation, a poster, a flyer, a post. You finish it by hand, beside the task.
- Skill
- How you want one kind of thing done, saved so that Jean does it the same way each time: a weekly report, a letter in your style. Type / in the box to use one by its name. See How skills work.
- Routine
- A request Jean sends itself on a schedule, every morning for instance, or once later, like a reminder.
- Flow
- The steps of a task you repeat, drawn one after another, to change and run again.
- Connection
- A service of yours that Jean may use once you connect it, such as your email, calendar or documents. It reads and acts there only as you allow.
- Helper
- For a big request in several parts, Jean hands each part to a helper, all working at the same time, inside the task.
- Intuition
- A small helper on this device that reads each request to choose the right brain and suggest what to do next. Nothing it reads leaves the device.
- Profile
- Each person on this device has their own: tasks, memory, settings and keys, nothing crossing from one to another. A child’s profile is set by a parent.
- Extension
- Something added to Jean to do more, such as checking what is sent. Each is kept away from your files and keys, and does only what you allowed.
Good to know
- The words are the same on every screen, so a step in this help says what your screen says.
- In another language, Jean uses that language’s own words for all of these.
If it doesn’t work
A word here isn’t on your screen
It comes with a capability you haven’t found yet. Settings › Capabilities shows each one, and how it comes.
Still stuck?
Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: What does “brain” mean here?
If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
