When Jean asks first

Jean reads and makes its own files by itself. Before it uses the internet, moves, deletes or sends anything, it shows you what it will do, and waits. Passwords and payments: never. You choose for each kind of action in Settings › Approvals.

Show me in JeanOpens Jean at the right place and points at each button. It changes nothing by itself.

What Jean does by itself

Under Do it: reading files, making and changing its own, searching, and running calculations on its own computer, walled off inside this tab, never on yours.

What it asks you first

Under Ask me first: using the internet, moving and renaming, deleting files, and sending and sharing. A card shows what it is about to do, and Jean waits for your answer: Allow once, Always allow, Not now or Never.

The card, as a task shows it: nothing is sent until you press Allow once or Always allow.

What it never does

Under Never: typing passwords and paying. Jean tells you it can’t, and why.

Change what Jean asks first

  1. Open Settings, from the menu with your name (or “You”), at the foot of the task list, then Approvals.
  2. Each kind of action sits under Do it, Ask me first or Never. Press one to open its page, and choose where it goes.
Approvals: each kind of action is a button under its rule.
  3. A dot marks each kind you changed, and Put back the usual puts them all back.

Good to know

  • Answering Always allow or Never on a card makes a rule for that kind of action, and Jean says where to take it back.
  • Once a service is connected, such as your email, its page has rules of its own: reading and searching apart from writing, sending and changing.
  • In a child’s profile, the parent’s rules hold. When Jean asks, the child can allow it once or say not now, never always.
  • At work, your organisation may set some rules. They show a lock, and can’t be changed here.

If it doesn’t work

Jean keeps asking the same thing

Answer Always allow on its card, or put its kind under Do it in Approvals.

Jean says it can’t do something

Its kind is under Never, or your organisation keeps it there. Move it in Approvals, if it has no lock.

Still stuck?

Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: What do you ask me before you do something?

If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
