Jean offline

AI on your own computer, even offline.

Download it once (3.1 GB) and it answers right here in your browser, with no internet, no account and nothing to install. It needs a computer with 12 GB of memory and a recent graphics chip, not a phone, and its answers are simpler and slower than a big online AI’s.

  • No account, anywhere
  • Nothing leaves the computer
  • Free and open source

Will it run on your computer?

Jean checks first. On a computer that can’t run it, it isn’t offered at all, and this page’s button opens the other AIs instead.

If yours can’t

Jean still works, with an AI online instead: a free account at a provider, a plan you already pay for, or your organisation’s own. What Jean keeps stays on your computer either way.

Already run Ollama or LM Studio? Jean can answer through it too, once that app allows this site. Connect Ollama or LM Studio

If loading the AI ever closes the tab, Jean stops offering it in that browser.

Downloaded once. Then no internet needed.

No program to install: your browser keeps it, as it keeps a page.

  1. Open the AI on this computer in Jean’s settings. Jean checks this computer first.
  2. Download it once: 3.1 GB. You can keep using Jean while it comes.
  3. Turn off Wi-Fi: it keeps answering, and the box says so.

Each time you open Jean, it loads from your computer before its first answer. Then, on a fast computer, its first words come in under a second. A smaller computer is slower.

Measured on October 18, 2026 on an M3 Max, once loaded: first words after 0.16 sec in Chrome’s engine, 0.5 sec in Safari’s.

Private, and you can check.

There’s no Jean server. With the AI on your computer, what you write stays on it, unless you have Jean search the web or send something.

Nothing leaves

Your request and its answer are written in this browser tab. The shield under each answer says so, from your browser’s own record of what the page sent.

Encrypted where it’s kept

Your conversations and files are encrypted on your computer. Clearing the browser’s data deletes them, unless you made a backup.

Marked as written by AI

What it writes carries a hidden mark, as the EU’s AI Act asks of AI text. Its answers are no worse for it, and anyone can check a long one.

What else works offline.

Once you’ve opened Jean with a connection, it opens again without one.

Works offline

  • Jean itself, at its usual address.
  • Your conversations, your files and everything Jean keeps.
  • Dictation, done on your computer, after a small download the first time.
  • Answers read aloud, by a voice on your computer.

Needs the internet

  • Searching the web, unless you set up an offline library: Wikipedia from a Kiwix server.
  • Working numbers out with code, and pages in answers: in Chrome and Edge, they need a connection to start.
  • Your connected services, such as email or a drive.
  • The download itself, and Jean’s updates.

What it does less well than a big online AI.

It’s a small AI, made to fit on a computer. Here is the difference, plainly.

You don’t have to choose. Add an online AI too: with Auto, Jean answers with the one on your computer while you’re offline, and “Keep on this device” keeps everything there, for a whole project if you like.

At work, your organisation’s own AI.

A company or a public body can have Jean answer only through its own AI service, on servers it chooses, with its sign-in and its rules.

What IT asks, answered

What it doesn’t do.

Your questions.

Is it really free?

Yes. The AI is a free download, Jean is free and open source, and there’s no account to make, at Jean or anywhere else.

Does it work on my phone?

Not the AI on the computer: it needs more than a phone or a tablet can give it. On a phone, Jean works with an online AI.

Which AI is it?

Gemma 4 E2B, an AI Google publishes openly, converted for browsers and downloaded from Hugging Face at a fixed version chosen by Jean. It reads and writes more than 140 languages.

How do I know nothing leaves?

Turn off Wi-Fi and ask something. And under each answer, a shield shows it was written on this computer, from your browser’s own record.

Does it slow my computer down?

While it answers, it works the graphics chip hard, and Jean keeps the page still meanwhile. Loaded, it takes about 7 GB of memory, which is why it needs 12 GB.

Can it search offline?

Not the web. It can search an offline library: Wikipedia and other books from a Kiwix server, on your computer, at school or at work.

Turn off Wi-Fi and see.

Opens the AI on this computer in Jean’s settings, and nothing downloads until you choose. On a computer that can’t run it, the settings open on the other AIs instead.
