Is Jean free?

Yes. Jean is free and open source: no account, no subscription, no advertising. The brain that writes the answers may cost money, depending on the one you choose. OpenRouter’s free account and a brain on this computer cost nothing.

What never costs anything

Jean, on every device and in every language, with everything it can do, as an installed app or in a tab, and your backups. Jean has no paid plan, sells nothing, and shows no advertising.

What the brain can cost

A free account at OpenRouter: free, within daily limits. A brain on this computer, or Ollama and LM Studio: free, once downloaded. A ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot plan you already pay for: nothing more than the plan. A key of your own: the company that issued it bills you for what you use, on your account there, and most ask for a payment method first.

See what an answer cost

Under each answer, About this answer shows beside Cost roughly what it cost, or Free, or that your plan covered it. In Settings › Brains, each brain’s page gives the price of each of its versions.

At work

Jean is free for every person. Only an organisation of 250 people or more that wants what its IT team asks for, such as audit exports and long-term support, pays a yearly subscription, never per person. See Jean for organisations.

Good to know

  • Jean has no tie to OpenRouter, nor to any other service it offers.
  • A key goes only to its own company, so only that company can bill you.
  • A service you connect, Notion or Gmail for instance, costs what your account there costs; Jean adds nothing.
  • Jean’s code is open, under the MIT licence: anyone may read it, use it and change it, for free.

If it doesn’t work

Jean says a brain is out of credits

Its account has nothing left to spend. Add some on the company’s site, or choose a free brain instead: see Choose the AI that answers.

OpenRouter’s free brain stops answering

Its daily limit is reached. Wait until tomorrow, or add a brain of another kind in Settings › Brains.

Still stuck?

Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: Which brain answers me now, and what does it cost?

If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
