What Jean is

Jean is an AI assistant in a browser tab. You write, dictate or drop a file in its box, and it answers: words, tables, charts, documents, slides. Nothing to install, no account at Jean, and your work stays on this device.

One box

Everything starts in the box: a question, a task, a file, a folder, a picture. Each request and what came of it make a task, kept in the list of tasks.

The box, as a new task shows it: Add to your message (the +) adds a file, Dictate (the microphone) dictates, Choose a brain (the chip) names the brain that answers, and Send (the arrow) sends.

A brain writes the answers

Jean works with the AI you choose, which it calls a brain: a free account, a plan or a key you already have, or a brain on this computer. You can change it any time. See Choose the AI that answers.

The first time you send, Jean asks how to get a brain: free in a minute, or with a plan or a key you already have.

It works things out, then makes them

For figures, Jean writes a small program and runs it in a walled-off corner of the browser, so they are calculated, not guessed. It makes Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and opens them beside the task.

A request about a sales spreadsheet, played again: the program Jean ran on it, what came back, then the chart.

Your work stays here

Your tasks and files are kept in this browser, on this device, encrypted. There is no Jean server: a brain in the cloud reads only what a request sends it, and a brain on this computer sends nothing at all.

What stays on this device, and what a brain in the cloud reads.

It asks before it acts

Before it sends, shares, deletes or uses the internet, Jean asks you. Passwords and payments: never. See When Jean asks first.

A request to send an email, played again: it waits on its card for your answer, Allow once or Not now.

More shows up as you go

Jean starts simple. When a moment calls for more, a spreadsheet dropped in for instance, it offers what helps, one thing at a time. Settings › Capabilities lists everything it can do, and how each one comes.

An offer, as it shows in an answer once a spreadsheet is dropped in. Nothing turns on until you say so.

Good to know

  • Jean is free and open source. The brain behind it may cost money; OpenRouter’s free account and a brain on this computer don’t.
  • It speaks 46 languages, and answers in the language you write in.
  • Once opened, it works without the internet, except for a brain in the cloud, the web and the services you connect.
  • In Chrome or Edge, it installs as an app with a window of its own; on a phone, it goes on the home screen.
  • Under the box, it says Jean is AI and can make mistakes. Figures are calculated; check the words, as you would a colleague’s.

If it doesn’t work

Jean doesn’t answer

It needs a brain first. See Choose the AI that answers.

Your tasks are gone

A private window keeps nothing once it is closed, and clearing this site’s data deletes everything. A backup keeps a copy: see Back up and restore.

Still stuck?

Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: What can you do for me?

If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
