Where your work is kept

In this browser, on this device, encrypted: your tasks, files, memory, settings and keys. There is no Jean server, and no copy anywhere else unless you make one: a backup, or a folder that your cloud drive syncs.

In this browser, on this device

Each browser keeps its own Jean: what you do in Chrome isn’t in Safari, and what you do on your computer isn’t on your phone. So does each browser profile, the desktop app, and a copy of Jean that your organisation serves at its own address.

Encrypted

Every file is sealed with a key made on this device, which never leaves it. With a lock, Jean opens only with your password or passkey.

What can clear it

A private window keeps nothing once it is closed. Clearing this site’s data, or your browser’s history with its cookies and site data, deletes everything here. A browser short of room may clear it too, and Safari may clear a site you haven’t opened for a week, unless it is on the Dock or the home screen.

Copies you keep

A backup is one file with all your tasks and files: see Back up and restore. In Chrome and Edge, on a computer, Sync keeps a copy in a folder that OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud Drive or Google Drive syncs, once Jean offers it.

Good to know

  • Settings › Your data says how it stands in one line: when the last backup was made, for instance, or Your browser may clear it to make room.
  • Space used, on the same page, shows how much room each part takes, and what can go to make room.
  • Installing Jean as an app, in Chrome or Edge or on a phone’s home screen, helps the browser keep its data.
  • A folder of your computer that you open in Jean stays where it is: in Chrome and Edge, Jean changes its files there; in other browsers, it works on a copy.
  • Your keys are never in a backup, a sync or a share.
  • Where what you share goes, brain by brain, and every address Jean contacts: Where your files go.

If it doesn’t work

Your tasks are gone

Most often they are in another browser, profile or address. See My tasks are gone.

Jean says nothing will be saved

This window is private. Open Jean in an ordinary window to keep your work.

Still stuck?

Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: Where is my work kept, and when did I last back it up?

If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
