My tasks are gone
- Fix
- About 2 minutes
- Every browser
Most often they are still there, somewhere else: in another browser, another address of Jean, another profile or another project. If this browser cleared them, only a copy you kept brings them back: a backup, or a synced folder.
Why a browser clears them
Jean keeps everything in this browser, and nowhere else. Clearing this site’s data, or your browser’s history with its cookies and site data, deletes it all. A browser short of room may clear it too, and Safari may clear a site you haven’t opened for a week, unless it is on the Dock or the home screen.
Steps
- Open Jean where you used it before: the same browser, with the same browser profile, on the same device, at the same address. The desktop app and a copy at your organisation’s address each keep their own tasks too.
- If Jean has several profiles, they are at the top of the menu with your name (or “You”), at the foot of the task list, and in Settings › Profiles: open the one you worked in.
- If you have projects, the project’s name at the top shows where you are, and opens the others: the task may be in another one.
- In a private window, Jean sees none of your tasks, and keeps none once it is closed; it says so on screen. Open Jean in an ordinary window.
- If they are really gone, restore your last backup: Settings › Your data, then Backup; press Choose a backup… and choose the file. What it holds is added to what is here; nothing is deleted.
Good to know
- A task you deleted can’t come back, except from a backup made before.
- To keep this from happening, make a backup now and then. Settings › Your data says when the last one is more than a week old.
- Installing Jean as an app helps the browser keep its data.
- Why each browser keeps its own: Where your work is kept.
If it doesn’t work
There is no backup
Then what this browser cleared can’t come back: no copy of it exists anywhere, not even at Jean, which has no server. From now on, keep one: see Back up and restore.
The backup brought back older tasks only
A backup holds what there was when it was made. A later one, if you have it, holds more: restore it too, nothing comes in twice.
Still stuck?
Write to arnaud@jean.is: say what you see on the screen, and in which browser.
