Back up and restore
- How-to
- About 2 minutes
- Every browser
A backup is one file with all your tasks and files. Make one from Settings › Your data with Download a backup, keep it where only you can open it, and restore it on any device from the same place. Your keys are never in it.
Show me in JeanOpens Jean at the right place and points at each button. It changes nothing by itself.
Steps
- Open Settings, from the menu with your name (or “You”), at the foot of the task list, then Your data.
Or let it come to you: after your third task, Jean offers this above the box, and Download a backup makes your first backup. - Press Download a backup. Your browser saves one file, named Backup and today’s date.
Your data, with Download a backup at its top. - Keep that file where only you can open it: a USB key, or a folder of your own. Anyone who has it can read it.
- To restore it, on this device or another: open Settings › Your data, then Backup.
- Under Restore a backup, press Choose a backup… and choose the file. What it holds is added to what is here; nothing here is deleted.
The page Backup opens: Choose a backup… is under Restore a backup.
Good to know
- Your keys are never in a backup: after restoring on another device, put them in again in Brains.
- Your data shows when the last backup was made, and reminds you when a week has gone by and you have done more since.
- A private window keeps nothing once it is closed, and clearing this site’s data in your browser deletes everything here. A backup is the way to keep it.
- To bring in your history from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, it’s Bring in from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, on the same page.
If it doesn’t work
Jean says the file isn’t a backup
Choose the file Jean saved, named Backup and its date. An export from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini goes through Bring in from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
You can’t find the file
Your browser keeps downloads in its own folder, often Downloads; on a phone, in Files. Its list of downloads shows where.
Still stuck?
Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: When did I last back up, and how do I restore it on another computer?
If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
