What the AI sees

A brain in the cloud reads only what a request sends it: your request, the task so far, and the files and passages it needs. Never your keys, your settings or your other projects. A brain on this device reads the same, and sends nothing anywhere.

What it reads

Your request and the task so far, or a summary once it gets long; the files and pictures you share in it, whole or the pages that matter; your instructions and, when memory is on, what Jean noted most recently; and what Jean finds for it: passages of your files, search results, a page it read, what a service you connected answered.

What it never reads

Your keys and sign-ins, your settings, the files of your other projects, and your other tasks, except the passages it finds when it searches them.

Who receives it

With a key of your own, that company, straight from your browser, under your account’s terms. With OpenRouter, OpenRouter, which passes it to a company that runs the brain; Jean asks it for companies that don’t keep or train on what they’re sent. With a ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot plan, the program you signed in to on this computer, which sends it on. At work, your organisation’s address.

Where each answer went

Under each answer, About this answer says Kept private, Done in the cloud or Sent outside this device, from your browser’s own record of what the page sent, and names each brain and address it reached.

Good to know

  • To let only a brain on this device answer, choose Keep on this device under Who answers, in Settings › Brains. Once you have projects, Keep this project on this device does the same for one of them.
  • When Jean works out figures, the calculation runs on this device, walled off and with no internet of its own: the brain reads only the result.
  • What Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive bring in goes only to a brain whose company doesn’t train AI on it.
  • There is no Jean server: no one at Jean can read what you write.
  • Every address Jean contacts, and what each receives: Where your files go. In full: the privacy policy.

If it doesn’t work

An answer says Sent outside this device, with a brain on this device

Something else went out, a web search for instance. About this answer lists each address the page reached.

Keep on this device can’t be chosen

There is no brain on this device yet. Add one, if this computer can run it: see Choose the AI that answers.

Still stuck?

Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: Which brain answered my last request, and where did it run?

If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
