Start free with OpenRouter
- How-to
- About 2 minutes
- Every browser
Send your first request, and press Start for free. OpenRouter’s site opens: make a free account there, allow Jean to use it, and you come back to your request, answered.
Show me in JeanOpens Jean at the right place and points at each button. It changes nothing by itself.
What you need
- An email address, or another account OpenRouter lets you sign in with.
- Nothing to pay: its free brains need no payment method.
Steps
- Write a request in the box and send it. With no brain yet, Jean shows One step before I answer: press Start for free.
- Or, at any time: open Settings, from the menu with your name (or “You”), at the foot of the task list, then Brains, press Add a brain, choose Start in one click, and press Continue with OpenRouter.
- OpenRouter’s site opens in the same tab. Make an account there, or sign in to the one you have.
- OpenRouter asks whether Jean may use your account: allow it.
- You come back to Jean, which says Brain connected and answers the request you sent.
Good to know
- Jean has no tie to OpenRouter, nor to any other service it offers.
- OpenRouter gives access to hundreds of brains. Some are free, within daily limits; the others are paid for with credits you add on its site.
- Jean asks OpenRouter to send your requests only to services that neither keep nor train on them.
- OpenRouter’s answers come from the cloud. For what should stay on this computer, add a brain on this device too: see Use the AI on this computer.
- The key OpenRouter gives Jean stays on this device, encrypted, and is never in a backup.
- OpenRouter’s terms are for adults, so a child’s profile doesn’t offer it.
If it doesn’t work
You came back, and no brain is connected
The sign-in didn’t finish. Press Start for free again, or Continue with OpenRouter in Brains, and allow Jean on OpenRouter’s site.
Jean says the brain is out of credits
The version answering isn’t free, and the account has no credits for it. Add credits on OpenRouter’s site, or choose a free one on its page in Settings › Brains, under Brain version.
It stops answering until tomorrow
Its free brains’ daily limit is reached. Wait until tomorrow, add credits on OpenRouter’s site, or add a brain of another kind: see Choose the AI that answers.
Still stuck?
Ask Jean in your own words, for instance: Which brain answers me now, and is it free?
If that doesn’t help, write to arnaud@jean.is.
